Shell Object Editor View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Mon, 18-May-2009

This program is an editor for shell objects. You can create new shell objects and delete them when you don't need or want them any longer. For safety reasons, it is not possible to delete shell objects that were not created with this editor by default. You have to switch to "expert mode" to delete other shell objects.

What is a shell object?
The "My Documents" folder is a shell object. It is a special shell object, a shell folder. Shell folders are not real folders on your hard disk, they only refer to real folders. They are a kind of "hard links", a special type of shortcuts.

Ok, you can use shortcuts to hard disks or you can use shortcuts to directories on your desktop to access places on your hard disk you often need to access. But you can't browse them that easy, shell folders are much easier to use.

The screenshot shows some shell folders on a german language Windows XP system. You can browse through their subdirectories on the left side of the view, or you can doubleclick on the right side. They behave in the exact same way as the "My Documents" folder (which, as you can see, is called "Eigene Dateien" in german). With the shell object editor, you can create as many of those shell folders as you want, although we recommend only choosing the folders you use most.

But there are more shell objects. The Internet Explorer, that resides on your desktop by default, is a shell object, too. It is not a shortcut because it has not the typical shortcut arrow. The Internet Explorer is a deleteable shell object, but you can create shell objects that are impossible to delete. This may sound like nonsense to you, but it is useful in some rare cases and such objects can be created with this editor.

Installation
Download the installer and run it. A program group will be created and optionally an icon in your control panel.

When you run the program, a list will appear that is initially empty. It will contain all the shell objects that you create with this editor later. Click the "Create" button to start the wizard which will guide you through the creation process.

If you select one or more shell objects in the list, clicking the delete button will be remove the shell objects immediately. Shell objects that were created by other programs, by the system or by yourself (using the registry editor) do not show up here for safety reasons. This way you can't trash your system by just clicking the wrong item.

However, if you right-click in the list and select "expert mode", all existing shell objects will appear in the list and you are then able to delete some of them - even the control panel or things like that, which would make your computer unusable. Please do not delete Shell Objects that you did not create yourself, use the feature to hide them instead. You have been warned.

Attention
Note that this program uses some undocumented registry entries to do what it does. You are completely on your own with whatever the results may be. We tried the program on different computers and it works and does no harm, but we don't guarantee anything. We are in no way responsible for the results.

Please post bugs & suggestions in the forum (here).

TimeCube View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Sat, 15-Nov-2008

The TimeCube displays a small rotating cube, displaying the current date and time, directly on your desktop. OpenGL is used for quite some special effects: specular highlights, realtime bumpmapping und cube map reflections.

The cube is partially transparent, so you can see the window contents behind it (sometimes you have to look closely though). It can be dragged around on the desktop with the left mouse button.

Use the right mouse button to get a menu where you can set preferences as well as install it to start when windows starts if you want. Closing the cube is also done that way.

Requirements: You need Windows 2000 or better (XP, Vista) and an OpenGL 2.0 compatible graphics card. If you get error messages regarding shaders you should try to update your graphics driver first. The time cube has 8 different shaders compiled into it, and the best looking one that works on your graphics card will be chosen.

Installation: Download the .zip file and extract the exe file. Run the executable. It does not change anything on your system, it will only set some registry values to store its settings.

Uninstall: Remove the downloaded zip file and the exe file, whereever you extracted it.

SciTE 1.76 plus Shell Extension View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Sat, 05-Apr-2008

I am using only 64 bit windows currently, and got to the problem that my favorite text editor SciTE and the shell extension (Open with SciTE) are not available for 64-bit windows. For SciTE itself that is not a problem since the 32-bit version runs fine under XP 64. The problem is that the 32-bit shell extension does not work, it just doesn't show up in the 64 bit explorer.

Fortunately the source code of the shell extension by Andre Burgaud is available for download, so i recompiled it for x64. The installer uses Inno Setup and was taken from Bruce Dodsons package and slightly changed to support both 32-bit and 64-bit installations. However, I did take the official SciTE build and not the modified one from Bruce, missing all the extensions he added.
As I understand the license(s) the modifications i made to the shell extension and the setup script need not be publicy available. However, the changes that needed to be made are rather minimal. Just write me an email if you want to know something about it.

Note that a problem of this package might be that it also installs the 32-bit executable scite.exe into the 64-bit program files directory. I have not seen any problems though.

So to sum up what this installer does:
It installs SciTE and (optionally) a very usefull shell extension on 32-bit and 64-bit windows.

Transparent Image View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Sat, 13-May-2006

This Samurize plugin allows you to display an image, whereby its transparency is not only defined by the file contents, but also using a color key. For example, if you specify 'Red' as the color key, all red pixels in the original image will be drawn transparent. The color key is specified using a single color and a tolerance value.

Lua Script (beta 6) View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Fri, 03-Mar-2006

This is a beta version of a Lua Script plugin for Samurize. It can be used to run Lua scripts in Samurize, displaying results on your desktop.

The most interesting fact about this plugin is that it has interfaces to both samurize and ampi. That means, you can get info about the samurize client and control it, and you have access to all the multimedia features ampi has.

Samurize Universal Plug&Play Plugin View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Updated On:   Tue, 24-Jan-2006

Allows to display data from any network root device via UPNP. As most routers today support Universal Plug&Play (UPNP), you can query such a router for your external ip address, for example, or uptime, connection status, up- and download rates, and more.
Currently only "actions" are supported, "states" might follow
in a later release.
The current implementation uses the ports 8008 and 8058 to
interact with the UPNP devices found.

Custom Progress View Full Details
Submitter: Tropics
Released:   Sun, 13-Mar-2005

Visual Plugin.
This plugin is used to display a custom progress indicator. Three images are used: one background, one foreground, and one mask image. If the input value is 0, the background image is displayed. If the input value is 100, the foreground image is shown. For values in between, the mask is evaluated. Both are compared and if the input value is higher than the value in the mask image, the foreground image is used, otherwise the background image. That evaluation is done per pixel.

Given the input value is 50. For one pixel where the mask has a 60% gray, the pixel color is taken from the background image because the input value is lower than the mask. For another pixel where the mask is 30% gray, the pixel color is taken from the foreground image because the input value is higher than the mask.

The screenshot shows an example of a combined image, where the three bitmaps are given as subimages in a single file.
