Shell Object Editor
Description:
This program is an editor for shell objects. You can create new shell objects and delete them when you don't need or want them any longer. For safety reasons, it is not possible to delete shell objects that were not created with this editor by default. You have to switch to "expert mode" to delete other shell objects. What is a shell object? The "My Documents" folder is a shell object. It is a special shell object, a shell folder. Shell folders are not real folders on your hard disk, they only refer to real folders. They are a kind of "hard links", a special type of shortcuts. Ok, you can use shortcuts to hard disks or you can use shortcuts to directories on your desktop to access places on your hard disk you often need to access. But you can't browse them that easy, shell folders are much easier to use. The screenshot shows some shell folders on a german language Windows XP system. You can browse through their subdirectories on the left side of the view, or you can doubleclick on the right side. They behave in the exact same way as the "My Documents" folder (which, as you can see, is called "Eigene Dateien" in german). With the shell object editor, you can create as many of those shell folders as you want, although we recommend only choosing the folders you use most. But there are more shell objects. The Internet Explorer, that resides on your desktop by default, is a shell object, too. It is not a shortcut because it has not the typical shortcut arrow. The Internet Explorer is a deleteable shell object, but you can create shell objects that are impossible to delete. This may sound like nonsense to you, but it is useful in some rare cases and such objects can be created with this editor. InstallationDownload the installer and run it. A program group will be created and optionally an icon in your control panel. When you run the program, a list will appear that is initially empty. It will contain all the shell objects that you create with this editor later. Click the "Create" button to start the wizard which will guide you through the creation process. If you select one or more shell objects in the list, clicking the delete button will be remove the shell objects immediately. Shell objects that were created by other programs, by the system or by yourself (using the registry editor) do not show up here for safety reasons. This way you can't trash your system by just clicking the wrong item. However, if you right-click in the list and select "expert mode", all existing shell objects will appear in the list and you are then able to delete some of them - even the control panel or things like that, which would make your computer unusable. Please do not delete Shell Objects that you did not create yourself, use the feature to hide them instead. You have been warned.AttentionNote that this program uses some undocumented registry entries to do what it does. You are completely on your own with whatever the results may be. We tried the program on different computers and it works and does no harm, but we don't guarantee anything. We are in no way responsible for the results. Please post bugs & suggestions in the forum ( here).
Download History:
Version 2.0 added functionality to rename existing shell objects and to change their icon and comment.
Version 3.0 allows you to change nearly every aspect of your shell objects. You can also copy and move objects (e.g. from the desktop to the network neighborhood) and you can hide them without deleting. The main dialog is resizable now so you can manage a large number of objects if you need to.
Version 3.1 adds support for 64bit operating systems and allows for setting the SortOrderIndex for items in My Computer and on the Desktop.
Version: 3.11 Updated: Wed, 01-Oct-2008 Bugfix: Main window did not display at all in some cases.
Version: 3.20 Updated: Fri, 08-May-2009 Bugfix: Main window displayed (x86) also when using the 64 bit version Bugfix: Adding a program as shell object did not work in all cases Feature: Three more property sheets are enabled when enabling the "Add property sheet" option for folders - security, sharing and general attributes
Version: 3.21 Updated: Mon, 18-May-2009 Feature: The four property pages are now in a more intuitive order (thanks gymka for the hint on how to do that)

I installed this.. when I run it, it looks NOTHING AT ALL like the screenshot. There is no "expert" mode.... In fact, there is no "options" of any kind

the screenshot is of an explorer window, the program itself doesn't look like it. the screenshot is to demonstrate how it looks like when you add shell folders to your system.
right-click in the big empty space in the middle to get a context menu, you can enable the "expert mode" there.

Is it possible to change the order in which the Shell Objects appear? ie. Even if I create an object called "My Documents 2", it still appears way at the bottom of the list, after the Recycle Bin et. all, when viewed in Windows Explorer. Perhaps this can be added as a new feature in the next version! Over all, a great program! Didn't know I needed it until now!

Has anyone been able to sort the order of the shell objects in windows explorer? I'd like for it to appear right below My Documents.

Folks,
I found this in the M$ Windows registry guide:
First Icon Using the First Icon category, choose the icon that you want to appear first on the desktop: My Documents or My Computer. Table 5-18 describes the settings you need to apply for either scenario.
Table 5-18 Values in First Icon Setting Name Type Data HKCR\CLSID\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} My Documents SortOrderIndex REG_DWORD 0x48 My Computer SortOrderIndex REG_DWORD 0x54
If I add the following SortOrderIndex REG_DWORD $value to the CLSIDs of my favorite shell folders I can easily affect the order of items displayed in Explorer.
e.g. value < 0x48 display before My Documents value = 0x50 display after My Documents value = 0x55 display after My Computer
Hannes
p.s. how difficult would it be to add this functionality to the shell object editor?

That option is if the shell object resides on a floppy disk, cd-rom, or other disk that is not always connected to the computer. You probably won't need to use that option.
This tool is great, but it would be nice if I could edit existing objects instead of having to create a new one to change a flag or two.
Also, if I accidently delete one of my objects, it still appears in the list, and the SOE does not recognise whatever special "delete flag" windows applied to it. Even copying or moving it does not clear this flag and I am forced to recreate it from scratch.
Also it does not recognise resource names @FILENAME,-123 etc in which windows pulls the name from FILENAME's resources based on the number.
Still a useful little tool for creating symlinks in Windows. :D

yep i know what you mean ... that's why i added copy and move functionality in version 3.0 (2.0 didn't have that). so you also want the ability to change flags afterwords. normally i would say "no problem", but the source code of 3.0 was lost in a disk crash. i do only have the 2.0 source code, so i would have to reprogram the changes from 2.0 to 3.0 to be able to add other features.

(I'm the same guy who posted the post two posts above :))
Would you be willing to release the 2.0 source code, or at least document the registry/other stuff that your program does to make the shell objects? I'd love to be able to write my own Shell Object Editor :).

(Same guy again) You used this didn't you? :) http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnwui/html/shellinstobj.aspI've been poking around and I figured out how to assign shell objects to the different folders, and I can currently load a list of shell objects into a listview. I'm actually well enough on my way not to need source code, although others might appreciate it. :)

Just wanted to say this program is great. The potential for it could be greater if you were able to expand the objects it can edit. I recomend it to a lot of people. I havn't seen an equal program, I hope you do more with this.

The app does seem to terminate unexpectedly after clicking finish on Win 2003.SP1. It does create the symbolic link, however. This is a most welcomed and superb application. I could use it without reading any notes. Kudos!!! Jack!

Hello This is a brilliant program, i really like it but when you make a folder it appears in the "Other" section on "My Computer" if you are sorting by type. Is there any way of getting it under one of the others like, Hard disk drives or Files storred on this computers. Thanks Peter

Re: Shell Object Editor

Firstly, thanks for a great piece of software, Tropics. Nice coding Just thought i'd quickly post this as a warning, and solution, for people should they think of doing this, and ending up with the same problem as me. Background: My 'My Documents' folder is, through TweakUI, linked to a different directory than the standard one on C:, as my docs are on a different HDD. However, in My Computer, clicking the 'User's Documents' in the 'Files Stored On This Computer' section takes me to the old 'My Documents'. Therefore, i thought it'd be a good idea to use Shell Object Editor to place a copy of My Documents in my 'My Computer'. Problem: Doing this, by using Shell Object Editor and selecting 'Copy To -> My Computer' will cause My Computer to crash whenever you try to open it, and will cause problems with file dialogs. It also causes Shell Object Editor to no longer run, when you try loading it. Solution: If you have made this mistake, what worked for me was deleting the following 2 registry entries... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideMyComputerIcons\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace\{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103} Anyways, the long and short of it, DO NOT COPY MY DOCUMENTS TO MY COMPUTER. If you have however, the above might fix it. Hope this helps someone, and possibly this could be an alteration for the next version of Shell Object Editor. Thanks again for the great software. - Gabriel

Thank you so much for you work tropic.Program is great.I use it in 2005.And I forget it those years.I think the above comment is right.I move my documents to my computer, and my computer crash in every click. In my case the network connection also doesn't work.So I have to reintall windows.I hope the problem should give user a warning or tell user how to fix.But If don't also does matter.
And here is my little question.I found Shell Object Editor can add *.exe file as object. But when I add it to My Computer, and click the object, doest work. For example,I add C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe,"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe",%1 "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe",doesn't work, could you please tell me how to add *.exe as a object?very very thank you.sorry for my bad english.

i am very sorry that you had these problems after editing shell objects. usually it is much safer to copy an existing object, and then hide the original one, instead of move. the move functionality is really only for shell objects generated with the editor. however, the expert mode is only for people who are sure what to do, and you can easily crash your computer.<br /><br />with your *.exe question, usually you only give the path to the program. no %1 should be in there.
